Little Space Big City!

April 12, 2009 REAL ESTATE No Comments

new-york-homelessNow I’ve seen it all! For some of you out there, who are shocked when you see that developers are now creating studio/bachelor units out of 450 square feet, imagine my surprise when I walked into a unit at the Voyager by Monarch that was 320 square feet, not even the size of a hotel room!It is fair to say that over the past 2 years square footage is starting to become a shortage in the city, especially with a significant rise in construction costs. The developers are always finding new ways of passing that cost onto the consumer.  You may have noticed that along with smaller square footages in most new construction projects, that it is very rare to find a two bedroom unit that is over 1000 square feet, now the average size for a 2 bedroom unit is being squeezed into 650 square feet in some cases.

So now let’s take a step back for a minute, for those of you that have often felt discouraged at this new fact think about it this way, could it also be viewed as a means of simplifying your life?   There are now furniture companies like EQ3 and Up Country, who have taken this into consideration and are now creating condo/loft style furniture.  The dining room table is now a thing of the past, it has been replaced by the ever so modern coffee table and breakfast bar.  Bedroom furniture what’s that?, since having been replaced with flat beds with convenient storage units located underneath and closet organizers that can keep you in line, if you use them to your advantage.

We all have to move with the times and maybe in doing so we just have to evolve into creatures that don’t horde but shed the unnecessary in order to have our own little space in the great big city!
